Electrochemical System Design Engineer

JOB DESCRIPTION
The research field of electrochemical conversion – including batteries and (CO2) electrolysis – has rapidly developed in the past decade. Within TU Delft, we collaborate with industrial partners and multiple research groups in the e-refinery platform, where we aim to bring novel electro-conversion technologies to large scale application.

As upscaling of electrochemical cells becomes reality, we’re looking for an electrochemical engineer that can develop electrochemical flow cells for both lab-scale and large scale (kW-powered) devices. Your job is to design new cell geometries, provide feedback and support to research setups, and actively steer the development of upscaling of electrochemical prototypes. You will bring experience from mature related fields (fuel cells, batteries, water technology, etc.) to the table for innovating the designs of new technologies. You will be embedded in the research groups of David Vermaas and Tom Burdyny, to closely interact with researchers, students and other engineers.

As an electrochemical engineer, you will work both in designing and improving small scale setups (in collaboration with PhD and postdoc researchers, demonstrating novel concepts) and designing large scale setups for CO2 electrolysis. By engineering electrochemical cells and technologies, you’re both facilitating the scientific research and improving novel (low-TRL) technologies to make practical deployment effective. You’ll collaborate with industry and technology partners to manage the upscaling process. To complement our current team of researchers and technicians, we’re looking for an enthusiastic, pro-active engineer with experience in electrochemical system design

REQUIREMENTS
We’re looking for a candidate with:

  • A MSc degree (or MEng) in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, applied physics or similar
  • At least one year of professional experience in designing or operating practical electrochemical systems (fuel cells, batteries, electrolyzers, etc.)
  • Strong system-thinking skills: overviewing the whole system
  • Knowledge of engineering and/or manufacturing
  • Pro-active and creative mind-set
  • Fluent in English. Speaking Dutch is a plus

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Fixed-term
contract: 4 years.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, a discount on health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.

For international applicants we offer the Coming to Delft Service and Partner Career Advice to assist you with your relocation. An International Children's Centre offers childcare and there is an international primary school.
Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim.

TU Delft sets high standards for the English competency of the teaching staff. The TU Delft offers training to improve English competency. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer courses to learn the Dutch language.
