PhD Student position in Electric Power Transmission Technology

ETH Zurich is one of the world-leading universities for science and technology. At ETH Zurich, students discover an ideal environment for independent thinking, researchers a climate which inspires top performance. Situated in the heart of Europe, yet forging connections all over the world, ETH Zurich is pioneering effective solutions to the global challenges of today and tomorrow. Some 500 professors teach around 20,000 students - including 4,000 doctoral students - from over 120 countries. The research focus of the high-voltage laboratory is in the area of future electric power transmission technology. We are an international and interdisciplinary team from currently six countries and backgrounds in electrical and mechanical engineering as well as physics and we're seeking to hire two PhD students.

PhD Student position in Electric Power Transmission Technology

The high-voltage laboratory of ETH Zurich developed methods to identify and characterize novel gases, and developed a model to predict the breakdown voltage in real gas-insulated switchgear geometries. The research topic of the successful candidate will be the experimental and/or theoretical investigation of novel molecules and gas mixtures as well as the simulation of their discharge behavior for application in high-voltage insulation and resistive plate chamber detectors in high-energy physics experiments.

The successful candidate has graduated from a university and received an excellent degree in electrical engineering, physics, mechanical engineering or a related subject. She/he is motivated and interested in working within an interdisciplinary research group. She/he works systematically and independently, is well organized and can present her/his results. Prior experience in high-voltage engineering, plasma physics or electric power transmission technology is of advantage, but not mandatory.

We look forward to receiving your online application including the CV, academic transcripts (translated into English or German, if needed) including subject courses and grades (final year school and all years university) and letters of recommendation (only if available from previous internships or stipend applications; there is no need to ask for new dedicated letters). Please note that we exclusively accept applications submitted through our online application portal. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered.

For further information please visit our website: www.hvl.ee.ethz.ch. Questions regarding the position should be directed to Prof. Christian Franck by email cfranck@ethz.ch. (no applications).
