Software Engineer

Scientific IT Services (SIS, a section of ETH's IT Services) aims at bridging the gap between computational research and IT service and infrastructure provisioning, and provides a stimulating, flexible and family-friendly working environment. Scientific Software and Data Management (SSDM) within SIS is located in Zurich and Basel and provides bespoke software development and research data management solutions for scientific research projects across the ETH group.

Software Engineer

We are looking for a software engineer to to join our team in Basel. A central focus will be further developing openBIS, our in-house Java- and JavaScript-based research data management platform, electronic laboratory notebook and laboratory information management system, and services around it. In addition to ongoing maintenance and feature development, you will join at the start of a major redevelopment of openBIS. Development of a new JavaScript UI is planned as well as migrating the back-end to a microservices architecture.
You will also engage in other development tasks such as O3-RPS, a web-based tool for modelling and visualising ozone treatment of water systems, and integrating services to meet customer needs.

The successful candidate will be a software engineer with a degree in computer science or a related scientific discipline. You will have at least 3 years’ experience in Java, experience in either Python or JavaScript and a willingness to learn the other. Knowledge of both is an advantage. You will have a solid understanding of core computer science topics such as object-oriented design and data structures. Experience with REST APIs, agile development and continuous integration are also an advantage. You should be a good team player and also able to work independently. The position is located in Basel. Travel to Zurich, on average once month, and occasionally other locations, will be required to meet our Zurich customers and team, wider customers and participate in training.
