Research Assistant or Internship

ETH Zurich is one of the world’s leading universities specialising in science and technology. It is renowned for its excellent education, its cutting-edge fundamental research and its efforts to put new knowledge and innovations directly into practice. The Rehabilitation Engineering Laboratory is part of the Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Systems at the Department of Health Sciences and Technology and is located at the Balgrist Campus. We apply robotics, wearable sensor technologies and non-invasive neuroimaging to explore, assess and restore sensorimotor function.

Research Assistant or Internship

The Virtual Peg Insertion Test (VPIT) is a novel tool to objectively quantify upper limb movements for patients with neurological disoders. It can provide quantitative information during the rehabilitation of such patients that can help to better understand their recovery process or the effect of therapeutic interventions. The VPIT combines a virtual reality environment including haptic feedback as well as an instrumented, rapid-prototyped handle that records grasping forces (kinetics) and movement trajectories (kinematics). The test is being used extensively in ongoing studies with different neurological patients (stroke, multiple sclerosis, ataxia) and healthy subjects at multiple sites (Zürich, St. Gallen, Italy, Belgium, Canada).

Currently, there is an opening in the VPIT project focusing on maintaining and optimizing the hardware and software of the VPIT. In more detail, the goals are to 1) maintain the hardware that is required for the currently ongoing and future clinical studies and to 2) improve the graphical user interface and usability of the software that is used in these clinical studies.

We are looking for a highly motivated and curious student, who wants to deeply engage with the project and the environment of the Rehabilitation Engineering Laboratory. The applicant should be comfortable with programming (ideally in C++, OpenGL) and ideally a student in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or Computational Science and Engineering.

We look forward to receiving your online application including the following documents: CV, highlighting the relevant past experience and a transcript of records. Please note that we exclusively accept applications submitted through our online application portal. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered.

For further information about the Rehabilitation Engineering Laboratory please visit our website: www.relab.ethz.ch. Questions regarding the position should be directed to Mr. Christoph Kanzler, PhD student, by email christoph.kanzler@hest.ethz.ch (no applications).
