PhD position - Biodegrading Mg-alloys design and studies of their processing-structure-property relations

The Laboratory of Metal Physics and Technology (LMPT), which is part of the Department of Materials, carries out research and teaching in areas ranging from basic science to technology, mostly in metals-related areas. It is headed by Jörg F. Löffler, and is made up of physicists, materials scientists, and chemists from all around the world. LMPT’s aim is to develop new metallic materials, and to find and explore novel phenomena in metal physics and technology via detailed materials analysis and modeling.

PhD position - Biodegrading Mg-alloys design and studies of their processing-structure-property relations

A doctoral position is available in the area of design and optimization of biodegradable magnesium alloys for temporary implant applications. Tasks will involve thermodynamic alloy design, alloy preparation and thermo-mechanical processing, plus microstructural analysis using modern scattering and microscopy techniques. The project will be conducted in a highly interdisciplinary and stimulating research environment with excellent infrastructure, in close collaboration with persons working in the medical field.

The Laboratory of Metal Physics and Technology has a long history of successful development of novel alloy systems based on magnesium. Especially promising here is the combining of ultra-high purity Mg with Zn and Ca for biodegradable implants. In the doctoral project, this alloy system will be tested for applications in the cranio-maxillofacial area within an interdisciplinary consortium which consists of scientists and clinicians from the Department of Materials at ETH Zurich, the Vetsuisse Faculty of the University of Zurich, and the Department of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Hospital of Bern (Inselspital). Material and implant development plus in vitro and in vivo testing will be performed within a framework of three doctoral positions working collaboratively on this project.

The candidate should have a Master’s degree in materials science, applied physics, or mechanical engineering. Previous hands-on experience with metals research and metallurgy is a plus. The successful candidate must be willing and motivated to work at the interface of materials science and clinical research. He or she must demonstrate proficiency in oral and written English and be enthusiastic, creative and self-motivated. Good experimental and analytical skills are essential. The project starting date is 1 April 2019 or by mutual agreement. The position will remain open until filled.
