PhD position in the field of strongly correlated electron systems

ETH Zurich is one of the leading international universities for engineering and the natural sciences. It has about 19,000 students from over 110 countries, including 4,000 doctoral students. About 500 professors currently teach and conduct research in engineering, architecture, mathematics, natural sciences, system-oriented sciences, and management and social sciences. As a responsible employer ETH Zurich offers excellent working conditions and provides support and encouragement for its employees.

PhD position in the field of strongly correlated electron systems

The goal of the project is to investigate new strongly-correlated families, including low-dimensional- and heavy-electron compounds, topological systems, etc. using local probe techniques. The project, to be carried out at both ETH and PSI, will involve also instrument development related to achieving extreme conditions, such as very low temperatures, high-pressures, etc.

Besides curiosity, creativity and a real passion for science, the key attributes expected from the PhD student include motivation, dedication and commitment to work. The successful candidate should have a good background in condensed matter physics as well as some knowledge of low-temperature and magnetic-resonance phenomena. He/she is expected to work in an interdisciplinary environment at the interface between spectroscopy and low-temperature physics. He/she likes working on challenging problems and is fascinated by the possibility of exploring new phenomena arising under extreme conditions (such as quantum phase transition, spin-liquid states, etc.).

We look forward to receiving your online application. Please submit: (i) a cover letter stating your motivation for this position, (ii) a CV, including key achievements, (iii) exams and courses (with marks) which document your educational background, (iv) contact details of two referees. Selection will start immediately, so early submissions are strongly encouraged. Please note that we exclusively accept applications submitted through our online application portal. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered.
