Postdoctoral researcher / Project manager (100%)

ETH Zurich is one of the world’s leading universities specialising in science and technology. It is renowned for its excellent education, its cutting-edge fundamental research and its efforts to put new knowledge and innovations directly into practice. Applications are invited to work in the Plant Biotechnology Laboratory of Prof. Wilhelm Gruissem in the Institute of Molecular Plant Biology at ETH Zurich. The position is available from 1st April 2019 (or as agreed) for a 3-year term.

Postdoctoral researcher / Project manager (100%)

The successful applicant will lead research to study genetic mechanisms of resistance to cassava mosaic disease (CMD) in cassava (Manihot esculenta) landraces. Geminiviruses cause significant food and economic losses to cassava farmers in Africa. Genetic resistance loci have been identified and are widely utilized in breeding programs, however the underlying genes responsible for geminivirus resistance in cassava have not been identified. Using currently available genomic data and bioinformatic approaches, candidate genes will be identified in silico and verified in vivo in cassava using a combination of approaches including virus induced gene silencing (VIGS) and stable transgenic strategies (overexpression, RNAi, CRISPR). The project is performed in collaboration with researchers in the United States and Africa, and the applicant will be required to facilitate and participate in meetings, data exchange between project partners and compile regular progress reports.

The candidate should have a PhD with expertise in plant science, virology and/or molecular biology. Experience in next-generation sequencing technologies, bioinformatics, and analysis of complex genomes will be viewed favorably. At least some previous experience in sterile tissue culture and aseptic techniques (preferably in plants) would be preferred. Proficiency in spoken and written English is essential. It is expected that candidates are able to follow established protocols consistently and with a high level of attention to detail, work within health and safety guidelines, work both independently and in collaboration with other team members, and contribute to a harmonious working environment.

We look forward to receiving your online application including the following documents: A cover letter, CV, diploma(s) and the names of two referees. Please note that we exclusively accept applications submitted through our online application portal. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered.
