Doctoral position in Natural Product Synthesis / Medicinal Chemistry

ETH Zurich is one of the world’s leading universities specialising in science and technology. It is renowned for its excellent education, its cutting-edge fundamental research and its efforts to put new knowledge and innovations directly into practice. The Natural Product Chemistry Group of Prof. Karl-Heinz Altmann at ETH Zürich is seeking a candidate for a doctoral position in natural product total synthesis.

Doctoral position in Natural Product Synthesis / Medicinal Chemistry

Research in our group is centered on the exploration of natural products as potential leads for drug discovery and/or as tools for chemical biology. The work is (organic) synthesis-based and for the larger part involves natural product total synthesis and the synthesis of modified variants of bioactive natural products for structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies, lead optimization, structural editing and the development of tool compounds. Biochemical, cell biological, and pharmacological studies are carried out in a wide range of collaborations. Target natural products generally are chosen according to their potential antitumor or antibacterial activity. In addition, we also pursue research in medicinal chemistry with a focus on membrane transporters (amino acid transporters, drug efflux pumps, endocannabinoid membrane transport); this can involve both natural product leads a well as synthetic starting points.
The position is for an SNF-funded project directed at the total synthesis of an antibacterial natural product and its SAR evaluation.

We are looking for a student with an MSc degree in Chemistry, preferentially with some experience in synthesis, either from a Master thesis or, e. g., from an industrial internship. However, students having worked on a non-synthesis topic for their Master thesis but with a keen interest in organic synthesis are also welcome to apply. Candidates should be highly motivated, self-organized, creative, displaying initiative and used to thinking sideways. Good command of the English language is expected. It should also be noted that all doctoral students at the Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences of ETH Zurich are expected to participate in the teaching of laboratory courses for undergraduate students.

We look forward to receiving your online application including the following documents: (i) a cover letter stating your motivation for this position, (ii) a comprehensive CV, (iii) diplomas and a list of courses attended, (iv) contact details of referees (optional). Please note that we exclusively accept applications submitted through our online application portal. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered.
