Doctoral student in Neuromorphic Hardware and Algorithms for Robots

Kungliga Tekniska högskolan, Skolan för elektroteknik och datavetenskap

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Computer Science

The position is funded by the EU FET H2020 project The Human Brain Project (HBP), and addresses research in neuronal computation for robotic systems. Here, we particularly focus on extensions and applications of neuromorphic hardware and on efficient algorithm design on such dedicated hardware. The successful candidate will explore the use of spiking neuronal networks on dedicated neuromorphic hardware (e.g. SpiNNaker, Spikey, TrueNorth, Loihi) to control real or virtual robots in the neurorobotics platform (NRP, https://neurorobotics.net ). Multiple experiments are envisioned, ranging from motor-control for compliant tendon-driven robots (e.g. for Neuroprosthetic Devices), up to event-based vision for scene understanding and mobile robot navigation. The Ph.D. candidate together with the supervisor will evaluate and select the most promising scenarios and develop combined hardware and software real-time demonstrators of neuronal function. Prerequisites include expertise about neuronal networks and computational neuroscience, but also experience in robotic applications (hardware and/or software). Optionally technology transfer from the lab environment into industry or Start-up Company.
