Third-cycle subject: Physics - specialization: Materials and nanophysics

The Nano-silicon group within the Applied Physics department is looking for a doctoral student in bio-molecule sensing. This is part of a multidisciplinary project aiming at the simultaneous detection of protein, RNA and DNA in individual immune cells. The project involves one group from Karolinska Institute and two groups from Gene and Protein technology, respectively, at KTH.

The work will involve fabrication of micro/nano devices in our cleanroom in Kista using silicon process technology as well as using these devices for electrical sensing of different biomolecules using antibodies. This will also be complemented by optical, fluorophore-based single-molecule detection. The candidate is expected to participate in all of the aspects of multiple biomolecule detection at very low biomolecule concentrations, such as chip functionalization, spotting of antibodies, assay development, microfluidics, sensing technologies, development of electrical measurement techniques and programs, data evaluation etc.

The employment is four years. Should department duties/teaching be included in the employment up to a level of 20 percent, an extension can be granted up to a maximum of five years.

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a degree at advanced level,
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
  • in any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

The applicant should preferably have a Master of Science in Physics/Electrical Engineering or in Materials Engineering with a specialization towards Nanoscience or Biotechnology.

  • ability to independently pursue his or hers work,

  • analyse and work with complex issues.
  • A relevant degree project, international experience, language skills are regarded as advantageous qualifications

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and personal suitability.

Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle studies may be employed as a doctoral student. The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year and may there after be extended. Doctoral students may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
