Doctoral student in Mathematics for AI

Kungliga Tekniska högskolan, Skolan för teknikvetenskap

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Applied and Computational Mathematics, specialization: Mathematical Statistics.
The Department of Mathematics invites applications for a PhD position in mathematics for artificial intelligence (AI), specifically the theory for learning algorithms and deep learning. The topic lies at the intersection of probability, analysis and AI, with an emphasis on probability theory. The project is funded by WASP , the candidate will be part of the WASP cluster AI/Math. Methods for machine learning, particularly deep learning, are now ubiquitous in many application areas. However, a satisfying understanding of underlying mathematical principles is lacking. The project will contribute to such an understanding and build towards a theory for learning algorithms and deep learning using tools from probability, statistical physics, PDEs and gradient flows. More broadly the aim is to investigate the role of stochastic control and stochastic analysis in AI.

Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by: Assoc. Prof. Pierre Nyuqist.
