Three Postdoctoral Researcher positions to investigate the effects of microplastics on aquatic ecosystems
The University of Eastern Finland, UEF, is one of the largest multidisciplinary universities in Finland. We are a home to approximately 15,500 students and 2,700 members of staff. We operate in the heart of scenic Finnish Lakeland at two campuses in Kuopio and Joensuu. UEF offers competitive staff benefits with occupational health care and paid sick and family leaves. Please read more about working at the University of Eastern Finland and living in Finland .
UEF water research promotes sustainable use of water resources by bringing together researchers and research groups from various fields of science. We are conducting research at a high international level and aim to be the most internationally recognized Finnish water research organization within ten years. We are inviting applications for
three Postdoctoral Researcher positions to investigate the effects of microplastics on aquatic ecosystems
At the microplastics research team, we apply interdisciplinary tools to study micro/nanoplastics and their surface metagenome. Our research also examines potentially hazardous chemicals such as additives used in plastics and chemicals absorbed from the aquatic environment, such as cyanotoxins and bloom-associated substances. This project embraces novel concepts and innovations by merging aquatic ecology, biomedical sciences, chemistry, genomics, microbiology, pharmacy, toxicology and human reproductive physiology. We offer a multidisciplinary research environment as well as opportunities for cooperation with national and international partners, thus facilitating the work of our postdoctoral researchers as they start their independent research career. We offer a highly collaborative work environment and modern research facilities that will help you to achieve your scientific goals and start a career as an independent researcher. The facilities include state-of-the-art genomics facilities, mass spectrometers, NMR spectroscopy and in vitro analytics. The research is performed in following research teams: Prof. Seppo Auriola, www.uef.fi/en/web/metabolomics-center Associate Professor Jaana Rysä, https://uefconnect.uef.fi/en/person/jaana.rysa/ , Academy Research Fellow Jukka Kekäläinen https://uefconnect.uef.fi/en/person/jukka.kekalainen/ . The research team is inviting applications for the following positions:
1) Postdoctoral Researcher position in the School of Pharmacy, Kuopio Campus
The Postdoctoral Researcher will be responsible for the planning, development and application of mass spectrometric techniques for analysis of chemicals and their metabolites in aquatic samples. The role of the Postdoctoral Researcher will be the characterization of substances causing health hazards and the identification of toxic metabolites and their persistence within particles in water, particularly in association with microplastics and algal blooms. A successful candidate will have good skills in sample preparation, mass spectrometric analysis of biological materials (LCMS, GCMS, high resolution MS, MS/MS), method validation, data analysis and reporting. Good knowledge of non-targeted metabolomics, MS databases, statistical methods and NMR is considered an advantage. Previous experience in using Orbitrap and Agilent QQQ instruments and software and knowledge of toxicology would be beneficial.
2) Postdoctoral Researcher position in the Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences, Joensuu Campus
The Postdoctoral Researcher will be responsible for planning, developing and using omics methods to characterize microbial and eukaryotic genomes, or plastic exposure and surface metagenome-induced genetic changes in human cells. The role of the Postdoctoral Researcher will be the characterization of metagenomes, metatranscriptomes and/or single cell genomes from different organisms and biofilms or to clarify the transgenerational impacts of these exposures, including potential horizontal gene transfer between microbiota and human cells. We expect you to have a PhD degree in molecular biology, genomics, bioinformatics, microbiology, physiology, developmental biology or a related field. A successful candidate will have good skills in producing and analysing nucleotide sequence datasets. Previous experience in high-throughput sequencing technologies, environmental metagenome research, single-cell sequencing or other supporting techniques will be considered as assets. Good knowledge of bioinformatics will also be considered as an advantage.
3) Postdoctoral Researcher position in the School of Pharmacy, Kuopio Campus or in the Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences, Joensuu Campus
The Postdoctoral Researcher will be responsible for in vitro toxicity studies of hazardous chemicals extracted from microplastics, cyanotoxins and bloom-associated bioactive substances. The role of the Postdoctoral Researcher is to focus on the characterization of toxic effects of hazardous substances from the aquatic environment on human health.
A successful candidate will have a PhD degree in toxicology, molecular biology, environmental sciences or in a relevant field. Previous experience in cell culture techniques is a requirement. Good knowledge of various in vitro tools (e.g. MTT assays and PAMPA cell permeability testing), microscopy techniques, and flow cytometry will be considered as an advantage.
A person to be appointed as a postdoctoral researcher is required to hold an applicable doctoral degree (UEF University Regulations, Section 31) that has to be completed by 5 June 2020. However, the doctoral degree may not be from more than 5 years ago at the time when the position starts, at the earliest from 1 August 2020. An applicant with a doctoral degree completed more than 5 years ago can be considered for a specific reason only (maternity, paternity, parental or childcare leave, military or non-military service). If the applicant pleads to the above-mentioned reasons, he or she needs to explain them in the application.
Good command of the English language is required.
The position will be filled for a fixed term of two years at the earliest from 1 August 2020. Postdoctoral researcher positions are always filled for a fixed term (UEF University Regulations, Section 31).
The salary of the Postdoctoral Researcher position is based on level 5 of the job requirement level chart of the teaching and research staff in the salary system for Finnish universities (2,967.84 /month). In addition to the job requirement component, the salary is supplemented by a personal performance component, which can be a maximum of 50 % of the job requirement component.
A probationary period will be applied to new members of the university staff.
The electronic application is required to contain the following appendices:
The application shall be submitted no later than 5 June 2020 (by 24.00 hours Finnish time) by using the electronic application form.
Please click on the "apply for the job" to submit your application.
The evaluation criteria for the applicants are the following:
Only applications that are complete and submitted before the application deadline via the e-application system will be considered.
