Four Postdoctoral Researcher positions to investigate the effects of heavy metals and emerging contaminants on aquatic ecosystems
The University of Eastern Finland, UEF, is one of the largest multidisciplinary universities in Finland. We are a home to approximately 15,500 students and 2,700 members and staff. We operate in the heart of scenic Finnish Lakeland at two campuses in Kuopio and Joensuu. UEF offers competitive staff benefits with occupational health care and paid sick and family leaves. Please read more about working at the University of Eastern Finland and living in Finland .
UEF water research promotes sustainable use of water resources by bringing together researchers and research groups from various fields of science. We are conducting research at a high international level and aim to be the most internationally recognized Finnish water research organization within ten years. We are inviting applications for
four Postdoctoral Researcher positions to investigate the effects of heavy metals and emerging contaminants on aquatic ecosystems
This interdisciplinary research team studies the effects of heavy metals and emerging contaminants (e.g. microplastics and pharmaceuticals) on aquatic ecosystems and aims to understand, prevent and solve current issues in aquatic pollution. The team consists of a wide range of well-established professionals from ecology to physics and social sciences, and can host ambitious postdoctoral researchers from various relevant backgrounds. The team has excellent facilities and recently updated infrastructure on both campuses. The research team is now looking to hire four postdoctoral researchers.
Main research fields and PIs involved include Material physics (Prof. Vesa-Pekka Lehto) http://www.uef.fi/en/web/pharmaceuticalphysics/research-group , Aquatic ecology and evolution (Prof. Raine Kortet, Prof. Anssi Vainikka, Assoc. Prof. Jukka Kekäläinen) https://www3.uef.fi/en/web/aquatic-ecology , Aquatic ecotoxicology (Research Director Jarkko Akkanen) https://www.uef.fi/en/web/ecotox , Biomaterials (Research Director Arto Koistinen) https://uefconnect.uef.fi/en/group/microplastic-research/ , Pharmacy (Prof. Jouko Vepsäläinen) https://www.uef.fi/en/web/farmasia/soveltava-kemia-ja-analytiikka , Environmental policy (Prof. Rauno Sairinen) https://www.uef.fi/web/serm , Environmental conflicts (Prof. Lasse Peltonen) http://www.collaboration.fi/EN/ , Management of natural resources governance (Prof. Irmeli Mustalahti) http://www.uef.fi/en/web/responsive-natural-resources-governance and Water law (Prof. Niko Soininen) https://www.uef.fi/web/cceel/niko-soininen . The research unit is requesting applications for the following positions:
1) Postdoctoral Researcher position in the Department of Applied Physics, Kuopio Campus
We are in search of a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher with a strong track record in emerging water treatment technologies to work full-time on a project focusing on the development of novel adsorbent materials for real-time monitoring, treatment and/or purification of natural waters. The primary tasks of the Postdoctoral Researcher include the development of adsorbents for dissolved contaminants (especially for metals), and developing techniques utilizing the adsorbents for treatment and on-site monitoring of water quality. The Postdoctoral Researchers duties include supervising PhD and MSc students, preparation of grant applications, and other tasks assigned by the employer. The position is suitable for competitive candidates with a strong background in materials physics, surface chemistry, nanotechnology or in a related field. The candidates are expected to present their own ideas for new ways to gather water quality data on a wide spectrum, and how to use the gathered data in studies of aquatic ecosystems. The contents of the project can be adapted to meet the interests and expertise of the candidate.
2) Postdoctoral Researcher position in the Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences, Joensuu Campus
We are in search of a motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to work full-time in a project focusing on ecological and evolutionary effects of emerging contaminants like microplastics on aquatic animals. The research will be supervised by a wide group of experts on aquatic ecology, aquatic ecotoxicology, physiology, behaviour and evolutionary biology. The primary tasks of the Postdoctoral Researcher include laboratory experiments on aquatic animal models (mainly fish larvae), associated analyses and publishing. The Postdoctoral Researchers duties will include some PhD and MSc student supervision, preparation of grant applications, and other tasks assigned by the supervisors. Candidates who are currently completing or have recently completed a PhD degree are encouraged to apply. The position is suitable for competitive candidates with a strong background in biology, environmental science or in a related field. The candidates are expected to present their ideas for novel ways to evaluate the behavioural and microevolutionary impacts of emerging pollution, and the final project can be further adapted to meet the interests of the candidate.
3) Postdoctoral Researcher position in the Department of Historical and Geographical Studies or the Law School, Joensuu Campus
We are looking to hire a motivated, full-time Postdoctoral Researcher specializing in collaborative and adaptive governance of freshwaters. The current position is directed especially for conducting research on governing harmful substances and/or nutrients. A successful candidate has an interdisciplinary focus and can navigate fluidly across the policy/law -divide. The position is suitable for competitive candidates with a background in environmental policy, environmental law, environmental social sciences, sociology, or in a related field. In addition to research, the duties include some teaching and supervision, as well as preparing applications for further funding.
4) Postdoctoral Researcher position in the School of Pharmacy or SIB Labs, Kuopio Campus
We are in search of a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to work full-time in a project focusing on health risks affected due to microplastics and their possible contaminants or leachates either directly or via other sources (e.g. from food). The research will be supervised by groups concentrated on analytical chemistry, biomaterial science, toxicology and nutrition. The primary tasks of the Postdoctoral Researcher include method development for contamination analysis and their health effect assessment. State-of-the-art instruments including FTIR, GC-MS, NMR and MS will be utilized, and further, in vitro cell culture studies and gastrointestinal tract models will be developed for health risk assessment. The position is suitable for competitive candidates with a strong background in analytical chemistry, pharmacy, biomaterials, biomedicine or in a related field. The Postdoctoral Researchers duties will include some PhD and MSc student supervision, preparation of grant applications, and other tasks assigned by the supervisors. Candidates who are currently completing or have recently completed a PhD degree are encouraged to apply. Candidates are encouraged to present their own ideas related to the above-mentioned research, and the final project can be further adapted to meet the interests of the candidate.
A person to be appointed as a postdoctoral researcher is required to hold an applicable doctoral degree (UEF University Regulations, Section 31) that has to be completed by 5 June 2020. However, the doctoral degree may not be from more than 5 years ago at the time when the position starts, at the earliest from 1 August 2020. An applicant with a doctoral degree completed more than 5 years ago can be considered for a specific reason only (maternity, paternity, parental or childcare leave, military or non-military service). If the applicant pleads to the above-mentioned reasons, he or she needs to explain them in the application.
Good command of the English language is required.
The position will be filled for a fixed term of two years at the earliest from 1 August 2020. Postdoctoral researcher positions are always filled for a fixed term (UEF University Regulations, Section 31).
The salary of the Postdoctoral Researcher position is based on level 5 of the job requirement level chart of the teaching and research staff in the salary system for Finnish universities (2,967.84 /month). In addition to the job requirement component, the salary is supplemented by a personal performance component, which can be a maximum of 50 % of the job requirement component.
A probationary period will be applied to new members of the university staff.
The electronic application is required to contain the following appendices:
The application shall be submitted no later than 5 June 2020 (by 24.00 hours Finnish time) by using the electronic application form.
