PhD student in host-pathogen interaction / drug discovery
The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a world-leading institute in global health with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries. Associated with the University of Basel, Swiss TPH combines research, services, and education and training at the local, national and international level. About 850 people from more than 80 nations work at Swiss TPH focusing on infectious and non-communicable diseases, environment, society and health as well as health systems and interventions.
The Department of Medical Parasitology and Infection Biology (MPI) explores the biology of pathogens that cause diseases of poverty, aiming to develop new diagnostic tools, drugs, and vaccines. Within the Parasite Chemotherapy Unit of MPI, we are looking for a PhD student in host-pathogen interaction / drug discovery.
We are seeking a PhD student to join the Parasite Chemotherapy Unit in the project "iPS technology to generate host cells for parasites: focus on Leishmania". This research project is funded by the Walter-Fischli-Foundation. The successful applicant will be based at the Swiss TPH, and registered for a PhD degree at the University of Basel, Switzerland. The anticipated start is in January 2021.
The overall aim is to develop induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell-derived human macrophages as an infection model for Leishmania parasites. This will enable new approaches to test drug efficacy in vitro and to study the molecular genetics of host-pathogen interaction. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) in Basel, stem cell unit in CBT/ETB led by Dr. Matthias Müller.
The required qualifications for this PhD position are:
- Master's degree in the Life Sciences
- Skills in cell biology and molecular biology
- Strong interest in infection biology and drug discovery
- Effective communication in spoken and written English
- Ability to work independently and as part of a public-private collaborative team
