Computational Biologist in Ovarian Cancer Research

To complete our team under guidance of Prof. Viola Heinzelmann-Schwarz, Group Leader of Ovarian Cancer Research Group, Department of Biomedicine of the University Basel and the University Hospital Basel, we seek for a Bioinformatician/Computational Biologist with a positive can-do attitude and a passion to add value and gain experience in working in an innovative, interdisciplinary, and collaborative team.
Main focus is the identification of mechanisms underlying the dissemination of ovarian cancer and chemotherapy resistance. Specific interest is the identification of molecular/genetic cancer therapy outcome predictors towards precision healthcare and medicine.

Start will be February 2021, temporary for 12 months, with possibility of extension based on performance

Your position

  • Analyze RNA and DNA sequencing data derived from bulk and single cell platforms
  • Organize, handle, and maintain sequencing and metadata and take the responsibility
  • Adopt bioinformatical challenges
  • Develop and maintain on analytical pipelines which allow common use of workflows and data storage at repositories
  • Participate in design of research projects and in grant writing

Your profile

  • PhD in computer science, bioinformatics, biostatistics, genomics or related field, with publication track record
  • High-throughput sequencing data analysis (data pre-processing, data analysis work flows) and handling of large data sets (analysis of CRISPR-Cas9 libraries is a plus)
  • Fluency in one or more programming languages with bioinformatic applications (e.g. Python, R Gui, Matlab, Bash, Bowtie, Samtools)
  • Application of statistical methods (e.g. mixed-effect models), supervised/unsupervised learning
  • Basic knowledge of data integration and in combining various platforms (e.g. transcriptomics with mass spectrometry-derived protein data)
  • Statistical and analytic rigor in tackling multidimensional omic datasets
  • Fluency in English (Basics in German is of benefit)

We offer you

  • Stimulating and interdisciplinary work in a true team spirit and comprehensive research environment directly linked to the University Hospital Basel
  • Access to various state-of-the art technology-derived data sets (bulk sequencing, scRNAseq, proteomics etc.) and a large biobank (> 2000 patients)
  • Opportunity to develop into a translational bioinformatician with biological and clinical background in cancer research

Application / Contact

Interested candidates should contact Francis Jacob ( ). Please submit your application (CV, motivation letter, and detailed listing of bioinformatical skill) to the same email
